Adventure & Experiential Programming

Where Growth Happens Beyond the Therapy Room

At Align Adolescent Recovery, we believe that healing doesn’t just happen in a chair. It happens in motion—on a trail, on a horse, around a campfire, or while learning to show up for others. That’s why our experiential programming is a central part of each young man's journey.

Through movement, nature, discomfort, and challenge, our students learn what it means to take ownership of their lives—while rediscovering joy, purpose, and connection along the way.

Learning Through Experience

Adolescent males often struggle to access or articulate their emotions in traditional settings. Experiential work gives them a different way in.

Every activity—whether it’s hiking, horsemanship, paintball, or plunging into cold water—is an opportunity to build emotional regulation, develop leadership, and learn how to manage discomfort in a healthy, productive way.

Core Experiential Offerings

Horsemanship & Equine-Facilitated Therapy

Our professional-level equine program allows students to work with horses in both structured riding and therapeutic settings. Through these interactions, young men develop patience, empathy, and non-verbal communication skills—while learning to regulate their nervous systems in real time.

Equine work is integrated into clinical treatment and supervised by experienced facilitators and therapists.

"I can't even express how much I learned in equine. I am sure you remember back when I couldn't speak up to save my life. Well, I learned boundaries in equine. I learned the difference between being aggressive and assertive. I also learned, that it’s not always about me, and I have to be willing to work with others." - Alumni

Cold Plunge, Sauna & DBT-Informed Meditation

These integrative wellness experiences blends physical restoration with emotional regulation.

They become more than just recovery for the body—they become a tool for grounding, mindfulness, and emotional clarity. Each session is guided with intention, helping clients connect the dots between physical sensation and emotional awareness.

Level-Based Trips & Outdoor Adventure

Throughout a student’s time at Align, he will have the opportunity to participate in structured, phase-specific off-campus trips. These may include:

  • Overnight camping
  • Hiking and rock climbing
  • Paintball and team-based challenges
  • Leadership-focused wilderness intensives

Each trip is designed to reflect where the student is in his therapeutic journey—from early stabilization to transition planning.'

"My favorite trip was the level four trip. I felt like a leader for the first time in a while and felt I was capable of leading others." - Alumni

International Expeditions (Earned Opportunities)

For students who have shown leadership, academic effort, and clinical growth, Align offers the chance to participate in international service and adventure travel. Past destinations have included Costa Rica, Peru, Nepal, and Tanzania.

These trips combine:

  • Service projects
  • Cultural immersion
  • Trekking and nature experiences
  • Peer mentorship and community-building

These aren’t handed out. They’re earned. Each trip is a milestone—built on integrity, consistency, and readiness.

"Being of service in a war-torn, impoverished country made me really grateful for what I have in life and made me appreciate the little things. Changed my life." - Alumni

On-Campus Activities

Our 100-acre campus offers daily opportunities for movement, exploration, and unstructured time in nature. Students participate in:

  • Fitness Center
  • Basketball, volleyball, and skateboarding
  • Music room, recording studio, and art room.
  • Horseback riding
  • Service projects and animal care
  • Garden and land stewardship

Experiential programming is woven into daily life—not treated as an occasional reward.

"The motive behind me doing community service has changed since living at In Balance. My motivation comes from the peace of a productive day, not greed." - Alumni

Maintenance Apprenticeship

The cornerstone of young men rebuilding self-confidence is developing a sense of competence. Through our Maintenance Apprenticeship Program, young men gain practical skills like welding, carpentry, and basic mechanical work—all while earning school credit.

This hands-on experience not only supports emotional growth in recovery but also provides valuable credentials for future college or job applications. By learning tangible skills and seeing progress firsthand, adolescents begin to develop a strong sense of mastery and purpose.

"The maintenance program was really where everything started to turn around for me. I felt like I had spent years breaking everything around me—trust, relationships, my grades—everything. In the maintenance program I actually started to build things—great things, and this became true in every aspect of my life."  - Alumni

Culinary Apprenticeship

In our Culinary Apprenticeship Program, young men gain real-world experience by learning how to run a fully functioning commercial kitchen. From ordering and inventory to meal planning, cooking, and cleaning, they take part in every step of the process—while earning school credit.

Along the way, they build essential life skills like time management, communication, and teamwork. They learn how to prioritize tasks under pressure, adapt when challenges arise, and collaborate effectively with peers. This structured environment not only teaches responsibility and accountability, but also builds confidence and prepares adolescents for success beyond treatment.

Why It Works

Experiential therapy gives students the opportunity to:

  • Practice emotional regulation in real time
  • Develop trust, confidence, and accountability
  • Process trauma through movement and connection
  • Learn that struggle doesn’t have to mean shutdown
  • Build identity through capability and contribution

This kind of growth sticks—because they’ve lived it, not just talked about it.
